Hermaszewski, the Polish cosmonaut taken into space by the Soviets. He orbited the Earth 18 times—only to land in Russia.
“Socialism just carried off another victory,” Novak tells Kowalski. “The introduction of ration cards has been approved.”
“You call that a victory?” says Kowalski.
“Of course—no paper shortage.”
A large Warsaw supermarket finally takes delivery of a long-awaited supply of coffee. Within minutes, a long queue forms.
An elderly man with a walking stick suddenly appears at the front of the line and demands to be served first. Those who had been waiting protest, but the old man stands firm.
He waves his stick a scolds, “When I was a young man in 1920, I drove the Soviets from Poland. In 1945 you let them back in. So you may all stand in a queue. May I please have my coffee now?”
The crowd stands aside in hushed silence while the old man is served.
