Once upon a time in Monaco, I hung out at a watering hole called Le Texan, run by the very charismatic Kate Taylor.
It was a sad day in August 2021 when the universe took Kate’s soul, much too young, and welcomed her spirit back into the stardust continuum, dimming the principality’s brightest light.
Three decades ago I had the good fortune to meet Kate’s sister, Rainey, who, with her husband, Aron Fogiel, own the Hoffbrau Steak & Grill House chain in Texas.
I vowed if/when in the area, I would drop into one of their five locations to sample their country cookin’.
Driving in Dallas…
…is quite the challenge: A mishmash of highways and road works everywhere. Without iPhone navigation I would have been lost forever instead of checking into The Mansion on Turtle Creek, a tranquil refuge from the sprawling, unsightly city.
This iconic, elegant property proves once again that Rosewood has become the world’s premier hotel management company.
More pampering on a day-off from driving: This time a deep tissue massage for the scapular portion of deltoid muscles.
And only four minutes away: Nick & Sam’s Steak House, a setting reminiscent of The Great Gatsby (with a modern twist).
Ultimately, I cannot get past this notion: It was in Dallas that on 22 November 1963 democracy took a staggering step backward and the decline of our country began.
